A Writers Reunion Committee was formed in 1998 to arrange a Writers reunion in Canberra in 2002. The Canberra reunion attracted some 600 scribes, serving and retired, including a few WW2 veterans. Following the success of this event it was decided to formalise and establish an association. On 22 December 2004 approval was received from the Minister of Defence, Senator the Honourable Robert Hill, to use Royal Australian Navy in the title of the association.

On 20 January 2005 the Royal Australian Navy Writers Association Incorporated was registered with the Australian Capital Territory Government under the Associations Incorporation Act 1991. Under the stewardship of the inaugural President Lewis (Lew) Horsfield and Vice-President Geoffrey (British) Hardwick, the association’s membership grew and various activities undertaken. Since inception the association has conducted national reunions in Adelaide 2005, Perth 2008, Hobart 2011, Gold Coast 2013, Nowra 2015, Adelaide 2018 and Canberra 2020.
